[arachne] Fw: Re: Recent DNS changes

I thought I would run these comments about recent ISP trouble past the
group. The ISP just upgraded without notice, and this is the last
message back after some telephoning restored partial access. At that
point I could dial up and send and receive emails, but not reach any
internet sites.

In fact, the message was NOT a reply to the last phase of the problem
but to another message just before, so I will attach the email for that
(they didn't reply to it - they must have lost their place). After
putting in various changes, I could access html pages - but some didn't
download fully and just chopped off short.

I also attach the current version of my arachne.cfg, modified to remove
passwords but otherwise what I'm using right now.

The last telephone discussion I had with the ISP, they recommended
switching off proxies. That was what allowed reaching html pages, but
I suspect this may be the cause of the remaining problem. Maybe I
should get the right proxy and use that. As things are, some sites chop
off their download, particularly if there are a lot of links on the
page. The examples I gave are from a blog and from wikipedia, but it's
not just the size; some bigger pages seem to download OK.

But I await suggestions. As my chest cold is easing up, I should be able
to start applying them soon.

Thanks in advance, PML.

Peter,

I suggest you start from a clean config; and then setup arachne to use
PAP (AutoPPP).

If you rename your config files, hopefully that will force it to go back
to its defaults.

 From <http://home.arcor.de/guebie/basic.htm>:

"If your provider supports PAP/CHAP, you only have to put in your
username and password in page DOSPPPD setup. Goto Dialpage, click Setup,
make your inputs and save."

GST+NPT=JOBS

I.e., a Goods and Services Tax (or almost any other broad based production tax),
with a Negative Payroll Tax, promotes employment.

See http://member.netlink.com.au/~peterl/publicns.html#AFRLET2 and the other
items on that page for some reasons why.

After working through the new configuration with your staff, I now have
access to what I had before, BUT with the following exceptions:-

- My first full session jammed up after just over two hours. I logged
off but could not log back in again until after I had left it for an
hour or so.

- Some sites do not download fully but halt the download partway
through (still showing some text). A couple of examples are
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borg and http://johnquiggin.com. It seems
to relate to the size of the downloads, but it is not improved by my
freeing up some space on my computer, so I suspect the limit is in the
download process itself. These are sites I had accessed OK before.

Yours sincerely,
