Yes, I am familiar with it, but I usually use Vernon Buerg's
LIST.EXE.

Q: How do you know that the file you want is 08345678.CNM and not
one of the others that are showing in NC's left or right
   window?

A: Simple, you wrote down the number that was showing in the URL
line when you were reading the message from within Arachne.

Hmmm... the version of QEDIT I am using is capable of editing
files anywhere on the HDD and writing back the edited version
over the top of the old file in its old location. In fact it will
do it to files on either of the two HDDs I am using, or in the
RAMdrive. I don't have to move or copy the file into the QEDIT
subdirectory.

A matter of what you're used to.

I used WordStar some years ago, but I never did get the hang of
all the ctrl-K and ctrl-Q commands unless I had the "cheat sheet"
right next to me.

I prefer Delete to delete, shift-Delete to cut to clipboard,
Ctrl-Insert to copy to clipboard and shift-Insert to paste from
clipboard, only because that's what I've been using for 20+
years.

Fortunately QEDIT can be configured to almost any format you prefer.
