I think a full reconstruction may be necessary if it is to
work properly.

Why the blue blazes are they bothering with Arachne at all if
they do all the hard stuff with Widnoze?

Or are they just playing with Arachne as a hobby, like those
people who restore a vintage car so they can drive it once a
month for the fun of it, but do all their serious travelling and
commuting in a late model fuel injected, computer controlled,
air-conditioned, automatic transmission vehicle.

With the internal editor, you do get the To: CC: BCC: and other
fields at the top of the screen, when composing mail. I doubt
that these could be retained with an external editor.

OTOH, using the current message compose/modify screens, the
text editing area could be replaced by a button [Edit Text] which
would take you to the external editor.

Yes, I think that would work if the contents of the To: CC:
and other fields were to be saved in a temporary file while
the editor was being called, and rewritten on the return.
