Reading Udo's and Jason's posts, what I'm always drawn to is the

DOS user I know is also a Linux user.

I think that's more indicative that DOS simply can't do everything people need it to do.

Inspite of the obvious advantages
of Linux, DOS continues to be used, even by people like Udo who are
quite familiar with the other. That should tell us something about the
appeal of small, fast efficient understandable systems.

I haven't had a dedicated DOS machine in over a decade, and I don't think I've even bothered having a dual boot at least since 2000. The last Arachne I ran was 1.66 for Linux, which I had on the RedHat 6.2 machine until... I guess it was late '06 / early '07.

I think DOS is so limited as to be totally useless for my purposes. The machine I'm typing on (in PINE) runs FreeBSD 7.0. It's my web server, news server, mail server, and print server... and soon to have the MySQL functions moved over here too (from a Debian 4.0 machine).

I do have a minimal X Windows on this old VIA CyrixIII-750 though I really don't do much "desktop" stuff at this machine except for e-mail.

Over on the Debian 4.0 machine I do all that "windows" sort of Desktop stuff like Open Office, web surfing, photo manipulation, multimedia, etc. but even there I don't run KDE or Gnome. I still prefer to type commands into an xterm than pointy clicky everything, though I do actually have a few menus configured for "long" commands that I prefer not to have to remember (or look up) every time.

DOS couldn't run all those servers at once, nor could it do all the stuff I do on the Debian machine.

Small, fast efficient, understandable? Even the old 486VLB-66 I got off eBay several years ago I used to try out FreeBSD 4.3.

So... *most* unix/Linux users are not also DOS users even though it might seem so judging by the microcosm of this mailing list. ;-)
