IIRC, it was XP that required online activation if the
hardware changed, and refused to function otherwise.
Na, I think that's vista. I changed hardware many many times with xp. I even use the same key. For this reason I still kept xp installed on one or two machines even though I rarely booted it. Can't say the same for vista.

Then with W2K and Windows XP one could not even access the hard drive by using a DOS boot floppy if he had made an operating system installation by accepting the "normal default" to partition his hard drive as an ntfs file system.
But that's not a cli issue. With xp you can still have a boot floppy and the same cli you had in dos. More commands even. The xp cli is more rich in xp not less. Now, you might not the VERSION of dos or the applications that will run. But the cli is richer. You can even put the unix commands.
