I used to run Arachne with a pure DOS machine and by using my old
cell phone as a modem connected to a serial port. It worked just
as well as any other real modem. I used it for dialing up my ISP
and establishing an internet connection by using Lsppp and epppd.

Cell phones have been "upgraded" since those days. They don't work
any more as a real modem. I never would have "upgraded" my old cell
phone if it were not for the fact that the cell phone companies had
conspired to install a technology "upgrade" in their cell phone
towers to insure that my old cell phone and all others of a similar
type would no longer work at all for any purpose, not even for use as
a telephone for doing voice communications.
