You sure that's just because the screen hasn't had time to
rewrite?  (Even on my pentium, the internal editor is so slow that
a screen rewrite can take several seconds when I do a 'page up').

You should dust off your skills, and give us a hand!  At the moment,
I have cut the core sources down to the bone and it's still
about 34,000 lines -- a lot of code to wade through, no?
