Arachne at FreeLists---The Arachne Fan Club!

Hi Guys 'n gals,

Here we go once again. I wish I knew more about DOS than I do.=
 The
scenario follows!

Machine is a 386/486 with 128Meg ram running W98. It has two hard=

drives, total around 6Gb, the second (D) runs almost entirely DOS=

programs of various types to do with ham radio, and the first (C)=

drive runs W98 with BOTH a winmodem and a real (external) hard=
 modem,
both of which can be used to dial up on IE and/or the Pocomail
e-mailer I use under W98.

The (E) drive is a CD re-write, but does not have DVD play. The=
 (A)
drive is a conventional 3.5 floppy.

D/loaded 175 gpl from Glenn's site and unpacked it onto the (D)=
 drive
into it's own directory. Plugged in the various info without any=

problems, and only had to change ATZ to AT&F in the dial-up to=
 get
full squeaks on connect.

After install I get an error type message that says something=
 like:-

out of conventional (low) DOS memory: (8584 bytes missing)

but goes on to say "enter arachne" to start the program. When you=
 do
this. it all starts up and I get Glenn's dialler screen for the
386PC, it all works fine and a click on dial gets the modem into=

operation, it all appears to handshake and then stalls, dead!

Using the terminal mode, it just sits there and does nothing else=

until it decides to give me the "PPP driver down or not installed=

message" and "arachne will fly to dialler in x seconds" when it=
 goes
through the whole thing again - - and again - - and again - -=
 and

well you get the idea.

At the side of the screen in the advice panel I get

DOS memory Kb 81(+)
Used XMS 1683
FreeXswap 1948
Used Xswap 113
Disc Space Mb 1104
hTTP Cache Items 3
37 HTML atoms

The full cfg file is next, this is what it looks like:-

Sorry for the size of this e-mail, but anyone out there in
arachne-land got ideas on why this won't connect any further?

Regards

Mel
