It's good to know stuff like that. Before one even starts to write
software, or to modify someone else's work, one should know what
exactly one is attempting to achieve. A 16 bit DOS browser can never be
a competitor to the bloatware browsers and shouldn't try to be.
As you said, it's the poor man's browser -- for older machines.
However, even within those limitations, my view is that Arachne
could do much more than it does, that's why I've tried to free
up so much memory, to make that possible.
But for me Arachne is more than that. Arachne has a unique look and
feel, and a unique 'attitute' and a unique way of treating
the user. Arachne has lessons to teach the 'big boys' and she
should be around so that the big boys can learn those lessons.
To do that the Linux port was the obvious next step.
