I suspect it may have been something like that.

But since Arachne does HTML, I used that method to get in and it worked.

I'll save the telnet for another day ;-)

BTW, the friend who had the problems initially is using Windoze XP. But
I suspect most of his problems are due to not reading the instructions
on the screen <GGGGGG>
