1. MMOUSE was working well, so I never had any reason to try
another driver.
2. Why was MMOUSE not loaded high? I have no idea. It seems to
work well enough from high memory. My config.sys and autoexec
date from waaaaay back and I guess there must have been some
reason at some time...

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately it hasn't solved the weird
relationship between number of items in the cache and delays in
things that shouldn't need to access the cache.
