I have now done that. It was previously DOS=UMB. free conventional is
615k, the same as I got after loading MMOUSE high.

Now changed. It was previously C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM, but I'm not sure
why.
But it hasn't changed the free conventional memory from the 615k that I
got by loading the mouse driver high.
And those changes haven't reduced the delays. For example when doing an
alt-E to shell to DOS, it is still about 5 seconds with 144 files in the
cache subdirectory.
And I've noticed that turning off virtual images has removed the delay
when loading pages offline, but the delay is still there when loading
them online, whether the pages are new ones being downloaded, or are
loaded from cache, or are strictly local ones such as movemail1.dgi.
