Also,
Try loading DOS in upper memory as well as HMA with a line
in CONFIG.SYS reading:
DOS=High,UMB
That is in addition to the advice I gave earlier to not use EMS
(Expanded Memory), but instead use only extended and XMS.
This also gives EMM386 control of the UMB and access to HMA.
In CONFIG.SYS:
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe noems
IF (big if) you MUST have EMS, try and determine how much you
really do need...limit the EMS to that size, leave rest for UMB
and HMA with this command in CONFIG.SYS:
device=c:\dos\emm386.exe 256 RAM
(the 256 gives 256 kb of EMS, RAM option gives HMA access for
device drivers)

ps...in case that first advice email didn't get through,
here it is again, hehe!
Greg,
One question...do you REALLY, I mean absolutely, have to have
EMS (Expanded Memory) ? I mean, the line you are using to load
your EMS driver, I assume to be EMM386.EXE, should probably
assign all available memory as extended memory...so, something
along the lines of this would be appropriate in your CONFIG.SYS
file, right after the line to load HIMEM.SYS :
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
Try that, and I bet without having to use only 64kb of the extra RAM
installed, Arachne will run better...just a bit of info on EMS (Expanded
Memory)...very few applications use EMS anymore, most that do are
limited to using 64kb, and those are normally old DOS apps. A few
will use multiples of 64kb, but I haven't ran an application that would
utilize mor than 64kb in eons.
Try it, the NOEMS switch that is!
C U L8R!
