Hi Ray,
I will not comment on all of your statements, but rather explain my
point. Some time ago, we had a poll as to which should be the code base
for the new version control system. As you probably recall, the majority
agreed on using v190;J1 as the base version. Joe was afraid that his
work on v190;J2-J3 would be lost, until I assured him that of course all
of his work would be available in form of incremental patches to the
code base. The same is true for your version, and if it indeed
incorporates all patches from v190;J1-J3, nothing would be lost.
However, to unify the sources, it is necessary to convert the sources to
a set of patches that can be applied to the code base, and that is now
v190;J1. Of course I will have to do the same with my DPMI version, and
merging it with the changes done for v190;J2 and J3 is just as important
to me.
Also, if you refer to your core as "the future", and the other ones as
"the past", please take into consideration that this depends on the
point of view. I could just as well say that the DPMI version is the
future, and that all of your work to reduce the Conventional Memory
usage therefore is insignificant in the long term.
However, I think the main problem that you have with the official code
base is not that it is "dirty" or "a dead end" but rather that you are
afraid that you might not be be able to split your work into functional
patches against the code base, and thus *your* work might become a dead
end. That is probably because your tree diverged much earlier than the
other ones, and therefore it would be much more work to join it with the
main tree again.
I suggest that instead of trying to sway everyone to adopt your
"cleaned" sources, you should start by creating a base patch against the
v190;J1 sources, then one by one, port some indisputable improvements to
the main tree. Since your core develops 10x faster than the other, this
should be a small feat. ;-)
Regards,
Udo
