I've seen similar operations in clothing stores (Open your Own
Business with $60,000!
Be Part of the Apparel Market...blah blah blah) and instant sign
franchises.
It's too bad the people getting duped into the franchises never sit
down and do the math!
They are all the same-you get all your equipment, furnishings, decor,
equipment, etc. for
an ungodly amount of money...then you have to buy all new inventory
from the franchise
mother company...and pay rent, utilities, advertising, franchise fee,
lease payments, etc. etc.
I watched it happen here with one of the 'instant clothing stores'
that tried to take us on.
I knew the owner-she should have just bought me out! (I have a 30 yr
old lingerie/clothing/jewelry store).
After she did $1,000...a chunk went to rent, utilities,
overhead...then paying on the franchise purchase
(a high interest loan) she would have less than 25% to buy new
inventory!
So every week and month she was further and further in the
hole...ended up with no money to buy
inventory, no inventory to sell, and bills piling up. I don't think
she made it a year!
Sign franchise...same deal-outrageous price to 'buy your own
business' with promises and promises...
when if they took the time to investigate, get some training, they
could have just called any sign supplier
and bought the same equipment, gotten training and support, for HALF
the money!
As you see with that EmbroiderMe...same deal. Only one making the
money is the franchise 'mothership'.
Yes, most likely you will get hurt by one of them opening up-because
they have to offer 'special low prices'
to some businesses to get their accounts. $3 teeshirts? Are you
kidding? I pay more than that if I have a
job subcontracted! So just smile, and send all your 'grandma toilet
seat cover' business to them...it won't
be long and they'll be buried-absolutely drowning-in onesy orders for
$5 while you handle all the corporate
and business accounts!
Coffee mug and tile printers, glass etching, instant bumper stickers
off your computer, home sewing machines
that 'embroider'...(choke, laugh, snort...you've seen what THEY can
do I bet!) It's all a money maker
only for the person selling the franchise.
Don't lose sleep over it-because now you have a competitor to send
all your annoying, pennypinching,
nasty customers to!
