You can't buy new Optacons, but occasionally second hand
ones come out of the woodwork or cupboard.

Thankfully they can, in the main, still be serviced and
repaired.

You beat me to it.  I could not have put it better.

I think the feeling was that, as scanners were so much
easier to use,
Optacons were redundant.  I know some people had problems
identifying the
letters from the vibrating rods.

I have had an Optacon since 1972 and think it is the best
reading machine
ever developed.  It does not translate the print, as a
scanner does, it
provides your finger with an image and you do the
translation.  I like that
as I feel I am in control.
