You beat me to it. I could not have put it better.
I think the feeling was that, as scanners were so much easier to use,
Optacons were redundant. I know some people had problems identifying the
letters from the vibrating rods.
I have had an Optacon since 1972 and think it is the best reading machine
ever developed. It does not translate the print, as a scanner does, it
provides your finger with an image and you do the translation. I like that
as I feel I am in control.
