I don't think you need to create a desktop icon in order to assign a hotkey
to an application. You should be able to do it by locating the application
and right clicking. Theres a shortcut tab in one of the menus.

Subject: [access-uk] Desktop icons and hot keys
To create a hot key I send an icon to my desktop then set the hot key. Once
the hot key has been set, can I delete the icon from the desktop?
