[access-uk] Re: a great wireless keyboard

Hi Andy

I use my new keyboards about 3 hours a day and I still wouldn't be without them. After all these weeks I haven't needed to replace the batteries.

No, you don't need to use the installation CD, but without it there are six curiously shaped keys under the last row of keys that aren't activated and which would otherwise manipulate window media player. I didn't install the software for the keyboard and I don't regret it.

The only other keys that do anything unusual are the four in a row at the top right, which activate calculator, outlook express, internet explorer and hibernate respectively. These do not use the software included.

The only drawback I have encountered is that top right hand key which sends the keyboard into hibernation, which you can easily press if you don't pick up the keyboard properly.

I still maintain that these are the best keyboards I have ever bought and I have bought seven other models from other manufacturers over the past few years that have all been unsatisfactory in some way or other.

Basically I can't recommend them highly enough.

You can telephone tecdata on the number I gave in the original email, but I only used them because they had someone who was prepared to describe the keyboard in great detail, but others can buy on my recommendation and probably find a cheaper price on the net.

I made two small errors in my original email, which were that the keyboard uses the 2 giga hertz range, and the effective distance the keyboard will work from the sender/receiver is more like 20 to 25 metres around my house.

Hope this helps

Stephen -

Just replying to an old message of yours to this list, in respect of the
cherry marlin keyboards. I've looked at the tekdata website, but can't see
this model up there.

Can you give any more info? And now that you've had one for a while, how is
it working for you? Is this keyboard plug and play, or does it need an
installation cd?

Thanks -

Andy

Hi Listers
A couple of months ago I commented to the list that I'd tried a number of
wireless keyboards, none of which I could recommend to others on the list.

These included keyboards from Microsoft, belkin, trust, 2 from logitec, 2
from creative and 3 from PC World. The problems were equally associated with
strange keyboard layouts as with the poor range of the systems.

However, I have just bought 2 new cherry marlin keyboards which meet all
the features I've always wanted in a wireless keyboard.

They are of the modern flat design, with positive key travel, with no bounce
and a slight click. The layout is exactly standard, with 3 groups of 4
function keys and a proper sized delete key together with an insert key. In
fact the keyboard has the feel of a highly professional unit, for a price
of £40 plus VAT and delivery.

The great thing about the keyboard is the range which is quoted as 10
metres, but I've tried it outside in the garden about 15 metres from the
sender and through two internal walls and an exterior wall - albeit in my
modern house, so I don't know what the range would be outside of an older
house with stone walls. But I would think that it would travel inside a
house from say a computer in the bedroom down to the lounge.

The sender/receiver is very small being approximately one inch by two
inches. It uses the 2 MHz range rather than the more usual 500 KHz range,
but it doesn't seem to affect my wi-fi system.

I have no experience of the optical mouse other than saying that the feel is
equally professional and it comes with a charging cable that when fitted
during recharging, allows the mouse to be used just like a corded mouse, so
users can always use it irrespective of the state of the rechargeable
batteries.

The keyboards can be purchased from: tekdata on 01782.665500.
