Graham, Version 0,5 of NVDA also works with SAPI 4 voices. So, if you want a change from the default voice, you can use the Eloquence voices not locked to JAWS, the LH voices or the Microsoft SAPI 4 voices, to name but a few!

Cheers,

Christopher

Hi Tom.

I have not tried Non-visual desktop on a pen drive though have installed it
on a laptop I have.

I must say that so far it does seem to me the best of the free screenreading
products, and at version 0.5 it is still very much a development release.
The voice is a little bit odd, but if it can really be run directly from a
pen drive in a similar way to system access, this is interesting.
