Subject: [access-uk] Damon's guide to Sky+ Remote Record

Below find my VI-friendly guide to signing up to get Remote Record and how
it works. I know it would have taken less time yesterday if I'd had someone
else explain it fully to me and - being as it's such a good service - I
thought I'd go to the effort of writing it down while it's still fresh in my
memory. Any corrections or amendments welcome.

Damon's easy step-by-step guide to Sky+ Remote Record.

The Sky+ Remote Record service on sky.com allows you to add TV shows to your

Sky+ box from your computer - especially handy if you can't see your TV
screen but still want to use a Personal Video Recorder.

For those wishing to give Remote Record a go, here's a brief summary of what

to do with a few helpful notes afterwards.

1: You need to setup a My Sky account on sky.com - unfortunately it has a
captcha graphic so you'll need sighted assistance - sky disability customer
services are unwilling to help with this due to data protection, they told
me. Note: you will need your 9 digit viewing card number printed on your
viewing card - the customer services people were happy to give me this over
the phone as I had no record of it.

2: You then need to walk to your living room, again with a little sighted
assistance in tow, because you need to tell your set-top box your My Sky
username, password and mobile phone number. The website tells you how to do
this, you hit the Interactive Button, then Sky Active, then Customer
Services, then Your Sky Features and select Remote Record. (Note that you
use your remote control a bit like a mobile phone number pad when tapping
your alphanumeric password into the sky box, in the absence of a qwerty
keyboard)

3: You then go back to your computer to add TV shows to your Sky+ box
remotely. Hurrah what fun!

4: Make sure that you are logged on to your My Sky account on your computer
before doing anything further.

5: From sky.com, click on TV Guide, then TV listings. You'll see that you
can then access the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG).

6: Spend a little timelearning how the EPG listings work. They're not as
user friendly or intuitive as they could be for a screenreader user. They're

definitely accessible though. You'll get how it works within a few minutes.

7: Browse the TV listings by channel and time then click on the programme
you want to add to your Sky+ box in your living room.

8: If you arrow down this page you'll see a synopsis of the programme you've

just selected. e.g. EastEnders: Den comes back from the dead again, honey
kills her child, everyone works in the same square and doesn't travel more
than 500 yards in any direction. etc. Arrow past the programme synopsis to
find Options. You can either email it to a friend or Remote Record. Click on

the Remote Record link and it'll automatically get sent to your set-top box.

9: Search for a programme: Rather than browse the TV listings in the way
I've described, you can also tap in the name of the programme you want to
watch in the search box. If you are a fan of Star Trek, for instance, it
will return results that show you when Star Trek is on across all channels.
So you'll see it on BBC2, Sky One, Sky Two and the Sci Fi channel. Great
too, if, say, you're a Take That fan looking for a show with them in it. If
you tap 'take that' into the searchbox you might find they're appearing on
all sorts of channels such as MTV, VH1, Biography, E4, QVC, Living, ITV2; so

you'll be able to record the lot easily. A feature that's actually better
than being able to see the EPG on the box as there is no search facility
there.

Notes:

* Note that with Remote Record you can only add programmes to your Sky+ box.

You can't delete what's currently in your set-top box's planner. Also,
currently you can't add Series Links either.

* Note you can only add up to 10 new programmes to your set-top box per day,

using Remote Record on sky.com but you can still use SMS to add further
programmes once you've hit your limit.

* Remote Record on sky.com is free. Remote Record from your mobile phone
incurs phone charges.

* I noted that my jaws 5.1 didn't work very well with the sky.com website.
For some reason it won't let me tap text into edit fields. I installed the
JAWS 8 demo and it worked fine with that. Someone else on Access-UK list
suggested that you can only use the website with JAWS version 7.1 or above
but this may need further confirmation.

* Once you've gone through the registration process for My Sky and you've
told your box your username and password, this also means you are setup to
be able to use the SMS Remote Record Service via your mobile phone.

* Despite telling sky.com to remember me, I still find I have to tap my
password into the My Sky login page so make sure that you're definitely
logged in before looking for your programme. It makes life a little easier.

* Note that if you want to have a look at how all this works before making
the effort to get sighted assistance and to go through the above processes,
you can. Go to sky.com right now. Click on TV Guide. Then Click on listings.

It'll be exactly the same for you even if you haven't registered. See how to

find and select a programme to record in my guide above, parts 5 through 8.
Find programme, click title, select the Remote Record option - only it'll
tell you that you can't remote record because you haven't logged on
obviously.

* Contact Sky disabled customer support: 08705 663333 or TextPhone on 08702

40 19 10.
For all account-related issues, email the team on
accessiblecustomerservice@xxxxxxxxx

* If you're looking for an accessible hard disk personal video recorder,
maybe you might consider Sky+ as an option.
