Hi Marie

Talks actually uses the external speaker so you can hear it without having 
to hold it to your ear.  You can adjust the volume of the speech so that you 
don't annoy people in the same room as you.  However, in noisey situations, 
I do have to hold the phone to my ear as the volume, at least on my phone, 
does not go very high.
